Train With NYU Kendo
Our practices are designed for members of different experience levels, from students learning kendo for the first time to experienced kendoka preparing for competition.
Through regular training, members develop fundamentals, improve technique, and build the endurance and discipline required for kendo.
Weekly Training
📍Palladium Athletic Facility
MONDAY 8:00–10:00 PM
WEDNESDAY 8:00–10:00 PM
SATURDAY 4:00–7:00 PM
Practice schedules may occasionally change due to university events, facility closures, or tournaments. Members should check club announcements for the latest updates.
A Typical Training Session
While every practice is different, training generally includes a combination of:
WARM-UP & SUBURI (準備運動 & 素振り)
Stretching, footwork, and repeated striking exercises to develop proper form and movement.
KIHON (基本)
Fundamental striking practice focused on accuracy, timing, distance, and technique.
WAZA (技)
Practice of attacking and counterattacking techniques used in keiko and competition.
KEIKO (稽古)
Free practice with other members, allowing kendoka to apply techniques in a more dynamic setting.
Your First Steps in Kendo
Beginners start by learning the foundations of kendo before progressing into full armor practice.
01. FUNDAMENTALS
Learn basic etiquette, posture, footwork, shinai handling, and fundamental strikes.
02. UNIFORM
As you progress, you will begin practicing in a kendogi and hakama while continuing to develop your fundamentals.
03. BOGU
Once you are ready, you will begin wearing protective armor and practicing strikes with partners.
04. FULL PRACTICE
After developing a strong foundation, you will participate more fully in drills, keiko, and competition-focused practice with the rest of the club.
Everyone progresses at a different pace. Advancement is based on readiness, safety, consistency, and technical development rather than a fixed timeline.
