Founded in 2006, NYU Kendo Club brings together students from across New York University through the practice of kendo.
Our members range from complete beginners to experienced kendoka, but we train together with the same goals: improving our technique, challenging ourselves through competition, and building a strong community around kendo.
NYU Kendo is a student-run club dedicated to the practice and promotion of kendo.
We provide students with opportunities to learn the fundamentals of kendo, develop through regular training, and represent NYU at collegiate and regional competitions.
At the same time, the club is more than practice alone. Through tournaments, team trips, social events, and time spent together outside the dojo, we aim to create a welcoming community for students who share an interest in kendo.
TRADITION
We respect the etiquette, discipline, and traditions that form the foundation of kendo.
COMPETITION
We challenge ourselves through practice and competition, representing NYU at tournaments throughout the year.
COMMUNITY
We support one another both inside and outside the dojo and strive to make kendo accessible to students of all experience levels.
Guidance Beyond the Student Team
NYU Kendo is supported by an experienced coach who helps guide the club’s technical development, training, and overall growth.
Through instruction, feedback, and mentorship, our coach works with members of all levels — from beginners learning the fundamentals to experienced kendoka preparing for competition.
The coach also helps ensure that our practice reflects the discipline, etiquette, and traditions of kendo while supporting the club’s development as a competitive and welcoming team.

20 Years of NYU Kendo
NYU Kendo Club was founded in 2006 and has continued to grow through generations of students who have trained, competed, and contributed to the club.
Over the past two decades, members have represented NYU at collegiate and regional tournaments, welcomed new students into kendo, and built a community that continues beyond graduation.
In 2026, NYU Kendo celebrates its 20th anniversary and the members, alumni, instructors, and supporters who have helped shape the club.
Part of a Larger Community
NYU Kendo does not train in isolation.
Through tournaments, joint practices, and other events, our members have opportunities to meet and practice with kendoka from universities and dojos throughout the region.
These experiences allow members to challenge themselves, build friendships, and become part of the broader kendo community.
