Complete your registration through the NYU Club Sports system.
New registrations must be started before the registration deadline. If additional documents, such as your physical form, are still pending, you may be able to complete them afterward depending on Club Sports requirements.
A Club Sports physical is required before participating in practice.
NYU students may complete the required physical through an approved NYU provider or another accepted medical provider.
Make sure the required Club Sports form is completed and uploaded to your registration.
You must be fully approved in the Club Sports system before participating in practice.
If your registration is still pending, you are welcome to come watch practice and meet the club.
Once approved, you can join us at practice.
For your first few practices, comfortable athletic clothing is enough. Beginner equipment is available, so you do not need to purchase a full set of kendo equipment before getting started.
You do not need to arrive with a full set of kendo equipment.
For your first practice, bring:
Comfortable athletic clothing
Water
A willingness to learn
Beginner equipment is available through the club. You can purchase your own uniform and equipment later once you decide to continue with kendo.
Many of our members begin kendo at NYU with no previous experience.
Beginners first learn:
Kendo etiquette
Footwork
Shinai handling
Basic strikes
Suburi
Partner drills
As your fundamentals improve, you will gradually progress into wearing a kendo uniform and bogu and begin practicing with the rest of the club.
Q. Do I need previous kendo experience?
A. No. Beginners are welcome, and no previous martial arts experience is required.
Q. Do I need my own equipment?
A. Not when you first start. The club has beginner equipment available, and you can purchase your own equipment later.
Q. Can I come watch a practice?
A. Yes. If you are curious about the club or are still waiting for Club Sports approval, you are welcome to come observe practice.
Q. Do I have to attend all three practices each week?
A. No. We understand that students have different schedules. However, regular attendance is strongly encouraged, particularly for members who want to compete or progress quickly.
Q. Can experienced kendoka join?
A. Absolutely. Members with previous kendo experience are welcome to practice with us and represent NYU in competitions when eligible.
Q. When will I start wearing bogu?
A. Beginners progress at different speeds. Bogu is introduced once you have developed the necessary fundamentals and are ready to practice safely in armor.
Q. Do graduate students participate?
A. NYU students who meet Club Sports eligibility requirements are welcome to join.
